London: Chapman & Hall, 1876. First edition, 8vo, pp.viii, 332. A very good copy in original cloth. Corners slightly bumped. Frederick Boyle (1841-1914) was a journalist and barrister who went to Sarawak in 1863. This collection of "stories" is based on his extensive travels. Three, A Haunted Jungle; The Rajah's Diamond; [and] The Sarawak Gazette, are set in Sarawak and culled from Boyle's lengthy sojourn there. Another, Changhi, is set in Singapore. While reading like fiction, the author states in his dedication: "Were these stories fiction, I should not have ventured to put them under your numen. Some have been changed in characters, locality, or other detail; for one cannot always tell a fact in its plain reality. But I may conscientiously declare that no tale in the collection is without its solid foundation of truth." Not in Hill, A New Checklist of English-Language Fiction relating to Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei, 1991
