London: Richard Bentley, 1848. First edition, first issue. pp.xxiv, 416, 7 plates. Original cloth stained and torn on spine. Frontis spotted. Otherwise a very good copy. A comprehensive account of Sarawak, its various peoples, and their way of life, mostly drawn from first hand observation, with descriptions of Brunei, both Court and town, and Labuan. This was the first definitive work on the country, and in many respects, the best book on Sarawak before the advent of the modern age. Low served James Brooke for over two years, travelling extensively throughout Sarawak and coming to know more of it than any of his contemporaries. He wrote this book while acting as Colonial Secretary to the Government in Labuan.

Low, Sir Hugh
(1824–1905), botanist and colonial administrator. "Low became closely associated with James Brooke, who was then establishing his regime in Sarawak.
