BINDING/CONDITION: light gray cloth with red and black on the spine; owner's small name label, and four address stamps (front endpaper, rear endpapers, and title page), one small ink stain on the bottom edge of the text block (not a remainder), otherwise a Very Good book, with a Good dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. The front panel of the jacket has good color, but the spine is badly faded. The jacket is not chipped.. 8vo (about 8.5 inches tall) . Bibliography, index. Dark olive endpapers. Description: Dust jacket design by Patricia Saville. Includes two short sections of black and white plates. A study of the San Francisco Vigilantes of 1856 and Jude Edward McGowan. John Myers Myers reveals the bag of totalitarian tricks unleashed by the vigilantes, including secret courts, dog soldiers with unlimited powers of search and seizure, and even a picture of an eye (foreshadowing Orwell's Nineteen-Eight-Four) to let the populace know they were under observation. Rear gutter code ''H14'' indicates a printing date of April, 1966.
