Index. Map endpapers. Description: Many black and white illustrations from old engravings. In 1861 several installments of a serial memoir of the Gold Rush entitled ''Incidents on the River of Grace'' appeared in a New York weekly under the pen name of Midas, Jr.. Carvel Collins discovered some of these installments, and eventually put the series together and through research in the National Archives discovered the author to be Samuel Ward, the brother of Julia Ward Howe. These installments described his life in the Southern Mines during 1851 and 1852.
