About This Item
1939. The Photograph is from her famous "Sally Rand's Nude Ranch" at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exhibition. The Photograph has her and several of her girls which was housed inside the Fair Grounds at a spot called The Music Box. She supposedly would perform in the buff but when challenged in court cases, she claimed that her audiences never saw a thing because "the Rand is quicker than the eye" often leaving judges laughing (or frowning). Although she had been arrested at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, she had found the middle ground between absolute nudity and the illusion that she performed in the 1939-1940 exhibition. In "The Right Stuff" an exotic dancer posed as her performed the routine before John Glenn and his fellow astronauts. Most collections lack this copy. A pristine copy. The Bancroft has one picture of the girls standing before a fence. The Pennsylvania State University Collection has four of the eight pictures. This photo does not appear to be in any known institutional collection.
