About This Item

New York: Lamport, Blakeman & Law, 1853. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. 8vo., 344pp. plus 2pg ads. Illustrated. Sharp First Edition. Bound in publisher's brown cloth with blind-stamped borders and decoration. Gilt stamped decorations and titling on front board and spine. Square, tight and fairly clean throughout with only a few scattered light spots here and there. Gently re-backed with most of the original spine still present. Hinges reinforce. Ex-Soial club library with a 19th century bookplate and call number on front end-paper and pressure stamp on title page. The author's name is written in ink on the title page, likely by a librarian as it is not otherwise listed. Fascinating collection of essays about some of the finer things in life at the time and general discussions of current society. Chapters include, "Facts and Fancies about Flowers:, Pleasures of the Pen", "Curious and Costly Books" among many others. Though showing its age a bit, still quite a handsome and collectable copy and very interesting to read.
