Washer, President of the Texas Board of Education to the author congratulating him on the book and on his august ancestry, and recalling that as a child hearing Henry Ward Beecher preach in Brooklyn: "I recall his imposing appearance, his flowing locks, his easy manner, his fluent utterances, as...he spoke of things of the spirit, of hope, and promise,,,,"Pasted onto the front pastedown is Stowe's holograph response, a one-page letter on his Stockbridge letterhead, dated July 11, 1934.
