Lombard-Hobson, CVO, OBE, RN, went to sea as a midshipman in 1930 during the twilight period of Britain's long supremacy as a naval power. He first saw service in China, the Middle East and the Black Sea. At the onset of hostilities in 1939 he rushed back from a posting in New Zealand to report to the Admiralty. He served in the destroyers Whitshed and Southdown before being given his first command, HMS Guillemot. He then went to the new destroyer Rockwood. After the war he stayed on in destroyers, saw active service in the Korean War in the cruiser Newcastle, and later served as British Naval Attaché, Rome. In 1963 he was appointed ADC to the Queen.
