About This Item
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1941. Cloth. Very Good +/Very Good +. Charles Michael Daugherty. A remarkable copy of the 1941 1st edition: WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR CHARLES MICHAEL DAUGHERTY TO HIS PARENTS (JAMES AND SONIA) on the front free endpaper. A very solid copy to boot: Tight and VG+ (light offsetting at the endsheets and pastedowns, mild spotting along the front panel's top-edge) in a crisp, price-intact, VG+ example of the uncommon dustjacket, with very lght chipping along the spine ends, mild soiling to the rear panel and very light chipping --with one or two tiny closed tears-- at the front panel's top-edge. Still though, a very presentable copy of this charming children's tale of a young sailor (Davey) who, "after disgracing himself by falling overboard the first time he tried to crew in a race", found himself "where no sailor wants to be--on the beach and without a boat". That is, until "Davey listened to the old salt, Chips, who told him that building one wouldn't be too hard". (from the front dustjacket flap). (Charles Michael Daugherty [1914-2004] of Westport, CT, highly-regarded children's author and illustrator, 4 of whose pieces are in the collection at the National Gallery of Art. His father was an author and artist as well, his mother a children's illustrator. He was educated at Yale and the Art Student's League).
