Caldwell, Idaho: Caxton Printers, 1938. Boards. Near Fine/Very Good. Nick Villeneuve. The uncommon 1938 stated 1st edition of this nonsensical guide to the mythical creatures of the Sawtooth Mountains. THIS COPY IS SIGNED BY BOTH THE AUTHOR HANK SENGER AND THE ILLUSTRATOR NICK VILLENEUVE on the title page. Tight and Near Fine in a crisp, VG dustjacket, with light chipping at the spine ends and along the panel edges. Still though, very presentable. Text in rhyme by Hank Senger. Featuring full page and smaller black-and-white lithographs by Nick Velleneuve showing a bevy of Seuss-like unanimals such as the Mugwump, the Whangdoodle, the Whizzer Snifter and others. A clear, early imitation of --and tribute to-- the wonderful creations of Dr. Seuss.

Description:
Caldwell: Caxton, 1944. 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good-/Very Good. Nick Villenueve. What a book. Lightly x-library (stamped withdrawn) but the wrapper did splendid job of protecting the dust jacket. Typically sturdy, handsome work by Caxton. Seussesque illustrations are gloriously rendered in the text, jacket front cover/board stamping/endsheets. The reds and yellows of the jacket read like new to me, remarkably so given the tedency of reds to fade and discolor. Slender book has an assortment of stamps pockets and so forth, but very carefully handled and structurally sound. There is an abrasion at the top of the books first endsheet, perhaps 2 postage stamps in size, hard to see as the color is unaffected. Jacket has 2 notable 'flaws' one being a short taped mend at front panel topedge, the other a laid on library title label (presumably as an aid to shelving) on the books spine as I suspect the spine was untitled when made. The book will be shipped in a new mylar wrapper as are all of… Read More
