1854. WHITTIER, John Greenleaf. A Sabbath Scene. Sewn, A.e.g. Boston: John P. Jewett and Company, 1854. BAL 22252. Lacks wrappers, dust-soiling to exterior leaves, else a very good copy. Illustrated separate printing of Whittier's bitter abolition poem, written in response to the Fugitive Slave Act. The poem tells of a dream in which a female slave seeks sanctuary in a church, where the minister trips her with his bible and turns her over to her master.
