About This Item

1913 Rubaiyat Omar Khayyam Limited Edition Persia Mystical Poetry Riccardi Press

"Waste not your Hour, nor in the vain pursuit

Of This and That endeavor and dispute"

– Omar Khayyam, Rubaiyat

The 'Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám' is said to be one of the ten best known poems in the world, and probably the most popular piece of Middle Eastern literature in the Western World. There are hundreds of editions published from Fitzgerald's various translations alone. This collection of Persian stories dates to the 11th-century and covers a wide variety of topics including philosophy, mysticism, and Sufi and pre-Islamic.

"Like the Odyssey or the Vita Nuova [it] was once the most widely known and quoted work of Victorian poetry in the world," and its place in Western culture at the time was secured by Fitzgerald's "epigrammatic, sophisticated, often mordant verses [that] display Fitzgerald's adroitness in handling this stanza form" (Warner).

This early 20th-century printing of 'Rubaiyat' is a Riccardi Press edition in the Eleven Point Riccardi Fount which have been printed on handmade Riccardi Paper. Only 1000 copies of the Ricardi Press edition were printed, and this is number 860.

Synopsis

Philosopher, astronomer and mathematician, Khayyam as a poet possesses a singular originality. His poetry is richly charged with evocative power and offers a view of life characteristic of his stormy times, with striking relevance to the present day.

Reviews

On May 16 2016, a reader said:
With Paintings and Decorations by Sarkis Katchadourian, born in Iran, where he recreated romantic frescoes in old palaces, he then trained in Rome, continued in Paris and then later in Munich. It is really fitting that this cosmopolitan artist's original paintings reproduced in bright colors and the black and white line drawings take you there celebrate under a bough with a book of verse and flask of wine you are magically drawn in and there drinking in the words of the poet.... drunk on the verse.
On Sep 11 2011, WonderPony said:
Fantastic poetry from 11th century Persia as translated by a depressed Englishman going through a divorce in 1859. The first translation is by far the best but it is interesting to get several of them and compare. I'm not a huge poetry fan but I love the simplicity, imagery and strange allegories Omar Khayyam writes about. He was apparently a big fan of the wine.
