London; 1879-1880: Hurst and Blackett. Octavo. In 4 volumes. Vol. 1 335p. with folding plate of upper, middle and lower wards; Vol. 2. 380p. with Index to vol. 1 and 2.; Vol. 3. 339p. Vol. 4.358p.with index to vol. 3 and 4. This was to be William Hepworth Dixon's crowning work but he fell seriously ill as he was reading the proofs of Vol. 3 and 4. His daughter, Ella Hepworth Dixon completed the final drafts. The set is rarely seen though it is the definitive work on the subject since Queen Victoria permitted him to examine every part of Windsor Castle and gave him the full assistance of her entire staff including the Librarian, Master of the Rolls, and a host of other experts. DNB notes he was revising the proof sheets of the concluding volumes when he died on December 26, 1879. Each volume has the bookplate designed by A.N. Macdonald for Catherine Anita Bliss of New York's social elite who was a major benefactor of religious and social groups as was her hero, William Hepworth Dixon. A very handsome set bound by Zaehnsdorf in 3/4 dark blue crushed morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands with compartments fully decorated and lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Only minor bumping to a few corners.

Description:
London: Printed by J. Barfield for Cadell and Davis, and Others, 1800. Octavo. 2nd edition. Volume one. Translated from the French. 379pp., three folding maps, (one very large map has old repair to fold). This is basically a reprint of the 1797 first edition with a few changes and corrections and of course with added maps. He had planned a five volume set over the next couple of years 1800-1801. Bound in full calf, spine flat and decorated in gilt, joints rubbed and somewhat fragile, closed edge tear to last page. Author's note: "It is scarcely necessary to say, that the high price to which paper has lately risen, and the still greater increase of expence, incurred by the addition of the maps, do not permit the price of this volume to be left the same as that of the first edition". A good copy.

Description:
1788 Queen Elizabeth I 1ed Progresses England Illustrated London MAP Nichols
"No library should be without these volumes!" (Allibone)
John Nichols was an 18th-century English antiquarian who was best-known for his portfolio of works on English royalty. Perhaps his most important work was his 'Progresses of Queen Elizabeth'. In this absolutely incredible work, Nichols highlights the reign of Elizabeth I and her influence on the English throne, foreign diplomacy, and much more. This book has long been considered one of the prime resources on the court of Elizabeth I much in part to the first-hand accounts included throughout.
According to Allibone,
"No library should be without these volumes…affording a living picture of the manners of England, its pursuits and its amusements."

Description:
Oxford: Henry Cripps, 1627 An extremely rare and interesting account of European states as they were in 1627. In new full leather binding with raised bands and gilt titles to spine. It is missing some preliminaries including probably the main title page. The title page remaining has had a paper repair and has been much written on over the centuries. There is a clear signature from 1859 but all others have been crossed out. The preface is a dedication from the author to the Bishop of Lincoln. The text is then divided into the 14 books each paginated separately. Books I to III cover England and Wales; Book IIII covers Scotland; V - VII Spain; VIII - X France; XI - XIIII (part) - Germany; and the remainder of XIIII covers Switzerland, Netherland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Hungary, Croatia and and Dalmatia. Each book has a woodcut header and a woodcut decoration to the intial letter. There is also woodcut decoration to the ends of sections. The contents are generally clean and bright, although… Read More

Description:
Bruxelles, Melines, Cans... 1854. This is the official French version of the history of the Italians (Beaumont-Vassy does not admit to an Italy) from 1815 to 1850. In his version, the Congress of Vienna served to establish Austrian dominance in the Italian states. Austrian misrule resulted in dangerous unrest among Italians, which resulted in an unfortunate revolution. Fortunately, the French Army at Rome suppressed the irresponsible brigands led by Garibaldi, and the future, under benign French supervision, will restore tranquility to the peninsula. This copy is from the library of Nicholas Brown, Minister of the United States to Rome in 1848-50, whose sympathies were with Italian republicans. Hard Cover. 2 p.l., 292 pages, leather spine, very good copy. Stock#OB383.
