Green cloth over boards with guilt lettering and design on the front and on the spine, blind stamped the logo on the back board. Top and for edge pages are deckled. Text remain bright and clean, previous owners name written on the inside flyleaf along with press label. No Dust Jacket. Shelf wear to the edges and to the head and toe of the spine with most wear and bumps coming to the head and toe of the spine, lighter wear to the tips.

An odd-shaped piece cut out of front free endpaper, hinges cracked, spine headers heavily rubbed, light general wear: VG/no dj. 12mo. Mason #310: 1st American edition, later impression(?) with top edges gilt instead of yellow and decorated endpapers. Binding decoration is sunflowers printed in black rather than cherub imbibing seen on some copies. Mason does not establish priority.

Bookplate of Lord Stanley of Alderley. John Thomas Stanley (1766-1850), 7th Baronet and First Baron Stanley of Alderley of Alderley Park, Cheshire. He undertook learned expeditions to the cultural centres of Europe, becoming one of the first explorers of Iceland.

THE ROSE AND THE KEY in All The Year Round, Volumes 4 thru 7, Chapman & Hall, 1870-1872, first edition, 4 volumes, some light wear to the fore edge corner tips and spine extremities, else just about vg copies bound in the publishers original blind stamped decorated cloth with gold-gilt lettering. A nice grouping free from any foxing. The true first appearance in print of this novel preceding the triple decker later in the year and the 1895 one volume edition. Also contains the complete novels THE DOCTOR'S MIXTURE (a.k.a. TWO FAIR DAUGHTERS) by Percy Fitzgerald; CASTAWAY by Edmund Yates & THE WICKED WOODS OF TOBEREEVIL by Rosa Mulholland. Included also is the first printing of Le Fanu's MADAME CROWL'S GHOST, the title of a collection of short stories which was first published in 1923, et.al.
