About this novel: Alex Haley's classic genealogical study. Traces his African-American family back to slavery days through oral history passed down over the generations. He also traces his family back to the Gambia, based on an analysis of African words passed down in that oral history. Haley went to visit Juffure where his ancestor, Kunta Kinte, had been captured and sold into slavery, where the local griot recited the village's oral history, eventually coming to the section where Kunta Kinte was captured while out chopping wood, which exactly matched Haley's own family oral history.
