About This Item
NY: The Press Pub. Co, 1902. West, Paul. Octavo. (16)pp. Die-cut shaped book, produced as a giveaway item in association with The World for Sunday, December fourteenth. Illustrated throughout, with line-drawn images and text in green ink on eight pages, and full-color pictures on the other eight, including the pictorial covers. These latter color illustrations display the Roly Poly dolls of various ethnicities—Dutch, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Inuit and Native American—where Santa makes his stops. These depictions attempt to display the Roly Poly figures in the traditional garb of their homelands, though they rely on racist stereotypes to do so. Charming for its holiday spirit, though problematic in its execution. Bound in colorful wrappers, hinged at top, with Uncle Sam as a Roly Poly on the rear cover. Some tearing to edges, else near fine, especially for such an ephemeral item.
