Subject is The religious aspects of Iroquois Indians rites and ceremonies (use of) staffs (sticks, canes, etc.) This monograph sets the historical and cultural context for canes, specifically a condolence cane collected about 1920 from Six Nations of the Grand River. In this important work Fenton presents the list of Six Nations Chiefs as recorded on the condolence cane. He describes its function; and provides an interpretation of the pictographs on the cane.
