NY, Philosophical Library, 1957, first US edition, hard bound in dust jacket, 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, VG/VG- condition ( dj shows medium chipping and wear, edge of pages very lightly stained), 190 pages, illustrated, index. ......................................... The author prefaces his book on rockets with a short historical account of their evolution; how they had been seriously considered both in the East and the West as potential weapons of war; and their introduction as successful innovations on such occasions as when Sir Sidney Smith's expedition against Boulogne in 1805 was supported by boats capable of firing salvos. But although experiments progressed in Europe and the United States, with scant fuss or favour, the world was to be embroiled in a second global war before the terrifying results of the German experiments were explosively made manifest in this field of warfare. As Sir Philip Joubert emphasizes, the Treaty of Versailles was instrumental in creating an incentive for the Germans to look for ways and means of evading its provisions, and Professor Oberth's dreams of space travel inspired and set the seal of success on Major-General Dornberger's work at Peenemunde. .............................................................. The rocket story the author unfolds from man's first modest efforts through to Peenemunde, and the Allies' eventual triumph over the German Rocketeers, is one of fascinating technical interest, with dra matic situations, which in fiction would hold us tense. V1 and V2 produced grimly tragic consequences, still too recent for comfortable thought, and we can but pause and consider with concern the "future of the rocket as a weapon of war." This book by Air Marshal Sir Philip Joubert, who was A.O.C.-in-C. Coastal Command from 1941-43, is an important addition to the literature on rockets, particularly since the Peenemunde story is seen from the Allied point of view.
