This is the scarce large paper reprint set, with 20 illustrations by Thomas Stothard & engraved by C Heath as called for.These have been very handsomely rebound in full dark brown leather wtith raised bands gilt ruling to the same, red title and vol labels gilt titles and sailing ships in two compartments and Robinson under the shade of a tree with his dog in the other two compartments date at base all in gilt, marbled endpapers new endpapers. A faded contemporary ink signature on the title page & pencilled writing the top of the preface page of vol 1 and again on half title & rear of frontis vol 2, this volume has old water staining from the half title stretching almost halfway across the page becoming less apparrent through to page 97. A list of Defoes works stretching to some ten pages follows the long Preface . Vol 1 429pp. vol 2 415pp.. Early Reprint. Full Brown Calf.. Very Good. Illus. by Thomas Stothard. Large 8 Vo. Synopsis

Robinson Crusoe was first published in April 1719, in London. In the beginning, the story was published as an autobiography, but it was later established that the author was Daniel Defoe. The novel became an instant classic, with four editions printed in the first year of publication. Often called the first English novel, it follows the story of Robinson Crusoe, a man marooned on an island. Crusoe’s adventure-packed story of survival started the genre of realistic fiction and inspired a slew of other survival novels. Over the course of its publication history, Robinson Crusoe has become the second-most translated book in the world.
