Both novels complete with introductions, notes, and appendices. Red brick cloth, stamped with black on front board, black and gilt on (wide) spine, and blindstamped on back board. Some rubbing on corners but still a nice overall effect. . Decorative Cloth. Good+/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Textblock soiled. Writing and a sticker on inside cover. Soiling on inside covers and endpapers. Area of surface damage on FFEP. Corner torn off rear endpaper. Some pages have mild soiling. Otherwise, pages yellowed, but tight in binding. Pictures available upon request. A locally owned, independent book shop since 1984.

Edinburgh, UK: Adam and Charles Black, 1853. Hardcover. Fair. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Volume 1 only. Novels and notes separately paginated. Half bound in brown leather over cloth covered boards. Top and fore-edge sprayed red. Coloured endpapers (possibly replacements). Small 4to. A large and heavy volume which may require an additional charge for overseas delivery. Boards very heavily worn and damaged, rubbed all over, corners crumbling, rubbed and scuffed all around spine, cloth from rear panel missing. Text block edges soiled and dust marked. Internally neat and clean barring the occasional spot mark and occasional minor edge indentation. Firmly bound.

The illustrated centenary edition of Scott's historical novels set in the medieval era, and the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author's fascination with moments of transition is evident in this twenty five volume set, and the novels demonstrate his belief that very different societies move through the same stages as they develop. For nearly a century after their publication, the lawyer's novels continued to be read all across Europe. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of volume I, 'Captain J. Bound in full green morocco, spines decorated with gilt and morocco inlay thistles, matching gilt floral patterns with inlaid purple morocco thistles on front and back covers, yellow morocco doublures with green morocco onlay borders and center pieces featuring an onlaid purple morocco thistle flower, yellow morocco endpapers, t.e.g., other edges uncut. Spines faded to brown, some minor rubbing to joints and extremities, else almost fine.
