About This Item
Little Brown, Boston, 1946; First Edition; 8vo, 176 pages; oxblood cloth; blindstamped front board illustration; gilt titles. Mesmerizing novel of entwining cultures, religions, and romantic love in colonial India, made into the 1951 film of the same name by Jean Renoir, for which Godden wrote the screenplay. "The River" was the first Technicolor project made in India, and Renoir’s assistant director was a fledgling Satyajit Ray. Martin Scorcese has called it one of the most beautiful color films ever made, saying he watches it three to four times a year, and Roger Ebert placed it on his "Great Movies" list, while Wes Anderson acknowledged its inspiration in making "The Darjeeling Limited." Very Good Plus, in a price clipped Very Good dustjacket that has miniscule corner chips and tanned spine. Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studio stamp at bottom of the first front blank end paper.
