Rising Sun by Crichton, Michael - 1992

Michael Chrichton, author of action books usually featuring technology at some level, took a knowing-chance with Rising Sun, a book about Japanese/American relations. Beginning as a typical murder mystery, it questions the involvement (particularly of the Japanese) in American technological advances. It questions motives of foreign corporate partnerships and existing security. What Crichton said was to be a wakeup call, was seen as an onslaught on the Japanese. With that in mind (and therefore a possibly out-of-balance story line), the book still reminds us of what The Guardian called his "inate talent for storytelling". It's a good read. Book Club Edition.
