Description:
New York, Dodd, Mead and Company,, 1896.. AS PLAYED BY JOSEPH JEFFERSON... Large 8vo. 199pp. Frontispiece, 11 plates and other text illustrations. PRESENTED BY JOSEPH JEFFERSON TO ELEANOR FARJEON, SIGNED, INSCRIBED AND DATED on the half-title: 'To My Grand Daughter Nellie Farjeon with the love of her Grandfather J. Jefferson Christmas 1896.' Jefferson (1829-1905) was a famous American actor. He returned to America after four years in Australia and met Dion Boucicault who revised Rip Van Winkle. She turned it from one of many plays in Jefferson's repertoire to his main success, and he was the leading man in this play for many years. The success of Rip Van Winkle was so pronounced that it became his main role for the remainder of his career. Francis Wilson later wrote: 'He was Rip and Rip was he.' This was presented by Joseph Jefferson to the author of children's books and plays Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965) who was known to family and friends as 'Nellie.'
