New York: Harper and Brothers, 1877. First Edition. Cloth. Good +. Brown cloth with gilt illustration and letters on front, gilt lettering on spine, front and spine both have black embossed illustrations. Wear to cap and tail of spine, wear to extremities, hinge is starting to get loose.
Front flyleaf has bookplate of Charlotte Wheeler Byram. Byram, born 1871 was a poet and essayist. She was married twice, her second husband Henry Pigott was her uncle by marriage. When they were married, Herbert was still married to Charlotte's aunt, Mabel. Mabel sued her husband for bigamy and Charlotte for alienation of affections. 403 pp., plus four pages of other books by Harper & Brothers.
On front flyleaf is written in ink: "Yard sale Fort Collins, COLO 1926 [previous owner's name]." On title page is a small newpaper clipping (2 1/4 x 2 1/4 inches, 5.75 x 5.75 cm) held on by a straight pin. The article is about scandal of the author's son eloping with the daughter of the Viceroy of Ireland. Frontispiece of author has tissue guard which is partially stained from the newspaper clipping. Inside the front cover is a pocket that contains two maps, (1) Imperial Border of Russia with China, taken from Col. Venukoff's map of 1872. (2) Sketch map, "shewing" the advances of Russia in Central Asia. Pocket in the rear of the book contains a map of Turkistan and adjacent territory showing Russian boundaries by Lieut. Col. Lusilin of the Russian Army 1875. All of the maps have some tears where folded but the maps are complete.
