Chicago: The Caxton Club. Near Fine with No dust jacket as issued. 1939. First Printing. Hard Cover. Limited Edition (one of only 350 copies designed by William A. Kittredge and printed from type by the Lakeside Press, Chicago). Quarter bound in publisher's tan cloth over blue cloth boards, gilt lettering on burgundy leather panel on spine, t.e.g., fore-edge deckle. Illustrated with tissue-protected portrait frontispiece, reproduced letter, maps of Quebec, the Battle of Monmouth, and the Entrance of Chesapeake Bay, and a reproduction of a page from Dearborn's Journal. These journals have been edited from the original manuscripts by Lloyd A. Brown and Howard H. Peckham. Includes a Biographical Essay by Hermon Dunlap Smith. Also includes a List of Works Consulted and a detailed Index. Henry Dearborn (1751-1829) was an American soldier and statesman. In the Revolutionary War, he served under Benedict Arnold in the expedition to Quebec, of which his journal provides an important record. After being captured and exchanged, he served in George Washington's Continental Army, and was present at the British surrender at Yorktown. He was US Secretary of War, serving under President Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1809, and served as a commanding general in the War of 1812. Fort Dearborn in Illinois and the city of Dearborn, Michigan, were named in his honor. .
