Riga: Izdevis Rericha Muzejs, 1939 Folio 34x25.5 cm., decorated cloth, 192pp., 132 tipped-in plates. First and only edition in Russian language. An uncommon, large monograph published by the Roerich Society founded in Riga, Latvia. It is the first and only published part of what was to be a larger series, which was curtailed with the Soviet invasion of Latvia soon after the book's release. It is an extensive coverage of Roerich's oeuvre, including Russian folklore and Mir iskusstva, but with primary focus on his work in the Himalayas and Tibet. Book design by Ludolf Liberts (1895-1959), a renowned artist and stage designer in Riga and art editor Albert Prande (1893-1957), a former student of Roerich at the school of the St. Petersburg Imperial Society for the Promotion of Arts. Author Vsevolod Nikanorovich Ivanov (1888-1971) was a philosophical writer and publisher who spent most of his life in the Russian Far East and China and was a close friend of Roerich s. He authored an earlier monograph on Roerich and collaborated on this work with Erikh Fedorovich Gollerbach (1895-1942), the well-known and widely published historian of art and culture. This is a sumptuous production on heavy paper and fine color printing. This copy fine, in rare original slipcase. OCLC locates seven North American library holdings.
