About This Item
Cassell, Petter, & Galpin, London, Paris, and in New York, No date. Reprint. Hardcover (Illustrated Boards). Poor Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Illustrated. preface by Parker Gillmore, list of full page illustrations introduction by author and index. Black and white illustrated frontispiece, showing Hawking In the Middle Ages, which is protected by a tissue guard that has become somewhat browned and foxed. The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white illustrations (307) of which 21 are full-page. Blue coloured textured cloth covered boards with gilt illustration to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. A carefully revised second edition of a work that was first published in circa 1870, ( this preface is dated January 1873). An early book on birds and reptiles and their common ancestry and how they diverged using the radical theory put forth by Charles Darwin. This book is in really sad shape, but would be suitable for rebinding. Heavy bumping, rubbing and fraying of the backstrip edges and to the book corners. The book corners show the underlying board. Rubbing and soiling of the book panels with sunning of the backstrip. Bumping along both the top and lower boards with browning of the textblock edges and lighter browning of the pages. Foxing has marred the pages. Both the front and rear hinge have cracked and the underlying webbing is visible, and the first five pages of the book have almost come away from the textblock. Offset tanning, browning and handling marks can be seen to the endpapers. A previous owner has placed their details to the front paste-down along with some pencil markings on the endpapers. Please see photographs. Second Edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [5], VI - VIII, [1], 2-624, [2] pages,. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Illustrated.
