About This Item

London: Printed by R. Hodgkinsonne [first volume]; Printed by T. Newcomb and W. Godbid [second volume]; Printed by and for John Field and Tho. Newcomb [third volume], 1661. 1st ed. of each volume. Hardcover. Good. frontises [the same frontis appears in each volume], [26], 669, [2], [32], 700, [20], [32], 920, [46]p. Old leather. Second and third volumes recently rebacked in a far different shade of brown and without titles labels on the new backstrip. Height varies slightly; first volume slightly under 28cm. and the other two volumes progressively measure slightly over 28cm. Joints splitting on the first volume and have been rather stiffly reglued. The frontis and title-page in the first volume are chipped and fragile; contents in all three volumes otherwise sound. Ex lib. (Lancr. Law Library Association) with rather discreet stamps on front covers and title-pages. Numerous pen strokes and a few written notes in margins in some portions of text, mostly in the first volume. Two former owner's names (Wm. Montgomery and David Thompson, with the latter dated 1767). Croke's reports were translated from the original law French by his son-in-law Harbottle Grimston. According to Croke's entry in "The History of Parliament: The House of Commons 1558-1603" edited by P. W. Hasler, these three volumes by Croke "... soon occupied a considerable place in the authoritative literature of the common law."
