Quarto size, 190 pp. Henry Wood Elliott (1846-1930) was an American watercolor painter, author, and environmentalist whose work was mainly focused around Alaska; this "Report", his field notes and observations upon the Seal Island of Alaska, was published eight years before his book "Our Arctic Province: Alaska and the Seal Islands". He worked tirelessly throughout his life to conserve the fur-seal, and co-authored a document with John Hay in 1905 that would become the first international treaty dedicated to conserving wildlife. The present volume is illustrated by the author with many maps, landscapes, and animal studies; it was submitted to the Smithsonian on March 31, 1880, but not published until 1884, and it is the first edition of Elliott's book.

___DESCRIPTION: Modern half calf with marbled paper boards, decorative gilt pattern along the interior edge of the leather, gilt rules, lettering, and decorations on the spine, cream endpapers, twenty-six plates throughout; quarto size (12" by 9.25"), pagination: [i-ii] [1-2] 3-188.

___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, rebound, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; some rubbing to the corners and to the head of the spine, and corners are bumped, else fine.
