About This Item

1807, hardcover. An important early Hazlitt, his political philosophy, that the individual imagination (idea of the good) is the source of voluntary action, sympathy with others, and self-control of population--as opposed to Malthus' concept that only imposed starvation and misery keep the poor from over-populating. [John Kinnaird and Hazlitt letters]-- Hardcover, later binding, 3/4 blue leather over marbled boards, gilt spine decoration, raised bands, top edge gilt, pages irregularly trimmed. -- Condition: very good (leather is rubbed at bands and edges; spine color a bit faded; marginal notes to a few early pages "18 Aug 1810"). -- Author (unattributed in this book) is William Hazlitt, 1778-1830. Pagination: iv, [3] - 40, 43 - 378; [6] pages of publisher's ads. Complete and collated as per Geoffrey Keynes "C8 has been cancelled ... pp.41-42 missing."
