About This Item

London: W. Clowes and Sons, 1852. Hardcover. Very good. First collected edition. 8vo. 22, 32, 37,38,61pp. Five full page plates. Contemporary cloth in a watered silk pattern. Black leather lettering label, gilt.

This is the first collected edition of Corbaux's articles in the Journal of Sacred Literature, Vols. I, II, and III, New Series.

A member of the Royal Society of British Artists, the author took up scriptural research as a pastime, publishing, first a treatise on the physical geography of the Exodus, then this treatise on the connection between the Rephaim and the Egyptians in the years leading up to the arrival of the Israelites into Goshen.

Presentation copy. Tipped onto the front free endpaper is a note in the hand of Corbaux: "To The Council of the Chronological Institute, from the Authoress." The front pastedown bears a plate acknowledging the book as a gift from Corbaux, signed by the Society's Registrar and Librarian, William Henry Black and dated 1852. The book later became the property of the Society of Biblical Archaeology in London.

Light wear to the edges, corners and hinges, else this is a very good copy.

Rare. Far less than ten copies are noted on OCLC, and no copies signed by Corbaux.
