One of the later exponents of French customary law as it developed in the 16th and 17th Centuries was Rene Choppin (1537-1606). Besides being the best at organizing that field, he combined French legal history and systematized the work of DuMoulin. Since he also took a decidedly anti-Calvinistic view of the political world and the church, his works were attacked by Franc Hotman, who allied himself with Calvin and the Geneva reformers. The importance of his works are noted by Frederick R. Goff in the April 1945 Library of Congress Quarterly. Besides Bibliotheque Nationale and the University of California Law Library at Berkeley, these items are rarely found complete. His collected works appeared Les Oeuvres de me Rene Choppin, divisees in cinq tomes (Paris, 1662-1663). The earlier versions are rare. Two volumes in one, both with separate title pages and dates, double and single column, bound in decorative paper covered boards backed in calf, paper spine label printed in ink, some leaves with overall toning, some lightly scattered foxing, damp stain to upper gutter of indexes. Binding rubbed with corners worn. A very good copy.
