About This Item

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company [1948], 1948. First edition. Hardcover. Very near Fine. 2 vol. [12], 3-532, [4]; [6], 533-1067, [3] pp. Blue cloth with a paper label on each spine printed in navy blue; grey toptains. Signed by Carl Sandburg on the limitation page of volume one. 1,000 copies of this edition were printed on rag paper. This set is numbered 69 out of 1,000. Lacks the slipcase and the glassine dust jackets. Heise 37. Van Doren 28. The trade edition was printed after this signed limited edition run. The novel follows a pendant struck in 1607, and the people it is passed down to throughout American history. The setting begins at Plymouth Rock, shifts to Valley Forge, then to the era of John Brown, and finally ends shortly before World War II. A lovely set.

A monumental novel that follows the growth of the American dream through more than three centuries. A saga, chronicle, and miscellany on folk themes, it is Sandburg's passionate testament of American life.
