Description:
1668 1ed Abraham Cowley English Poetry Mistress Motto Pindar Ode Davideis Sylva"What shall I do to be for ever known,
And make the Age to come own?"
I shall like beasts or common people die,
Unless you write my elegy." – Abraham Cowley, The Motto
Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. This charming, and rare, sixth edition was the last edition of the original one-volume printing. Following this edition, the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems, such as 'The Motto,' 'The Mistress,' 'Ode to Pindar,' and 'Davideis'
are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works, but in doing so, he misinterpreted the metrical patterns, and, in doing so, did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth's famous ode "Intimations of Immortality."

Description:
1663 LAW Justinian Institutes Codex Rome Corpus Juris Lyon Felix Basset Latin"Freedom is the natural ability of everyone to do what he likes, unless it is prohibited by law or by force."
― Justinian I
The 'Institutes of Justinian' is a portion of the full Corpus Juris Civilis, largely based on the Institutes of Gaius. Justinian sought to reform Roman law and education. This work was originally intended to be used by law students, but they were not solely used as a textbook, they carried legal weight …as law!
In 1634, historian Felix Basset gave a lecture in the court of King Louis XIII on the practice of forensic law based on the teachings of Justinian's 'Institutes'. In addition to the Justinian texts, this edition contains Basset's lectures and commentary on Justinian law.

London: George Sawbridge, 1674 pp (22) + 107 + 183-429 . In addition to the frontispiece there are five folding plates. This copy is complete despite the jump in pagination after page 107 ; it corresponds with that in the British Library. Internally very good subject to moderate browning, some fraying to the fep and fairly inoffensive evidence of moisture to the edges of the first few leaves. Hinges cracked although binding still holding. Cover, which looks to be contemporary, rather worn. The boards scuffed with wear to the edges and corners. The ornate spine has significant wear to both extremities. Scans available.

At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages. This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More

Description:
This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
