[5] pages; illustrated with engraved title leaf, a double-page engraved map, one small folding plate, and forty-seven rather dramatic engravings, of which 44 are in-text and 3 are full page; there is an engraved portrait of George Sandys stubbed in as frontispiece.~~George Sandys, English traveller and translator, was known for his travel narratives of the Eastern Mediterranean.~~ (ESTC S114571; STC (2nd ed.) 21728). Folding plate of the Sultan's seraglio. Full page plate of The historical columne in Aurat Basar, another of the sculpture of Nilus and numerous engravings throughout the text. Bound in early 20th century black half calf with marbled boards. The spine is gilt between the raised bands, with a contrasting label. There is a little rubbing to the edges and corners and light shelfwear to the marbled boards. The binder has trimmed the margins, just shaving the printed border at the foot of the map but not affecting any side notes. The blank corner of A2 is torn away without affecting any text. The title page is signed twice by an early owner Ric. Mansfeild his booke and there are a few marginalia in his hand. A sound and complete copy.

Both book and DJ are in very good condition. DJ is not clipped. Slight tear to DJ is 2 places. and some wear to top of spine of DJ. Please see photos.

The outer binding of this leather-bound book shows many signs of wear over the last 340 years, but the hinges are firm and intact. Endpapers are heavily toned and there are some light pencil scrawls on REP's (child scribbling?). Some end papers have small tears and creases. Published by the long-time printing firm, Thomas Newcomb for another London printer, Joseph Hindmarsh, at the "Black Bull in Cornhill, near the Royal Exchange." Seneca was a Stoic philosopher of Ancient Rome, a statesman and dramatist.

A scarce copy of Hooper's second work, an apologetic in defence of the Anglican Church. Hooper had a more than accomplished academic record, being elected a scholar at St Paul's School, and subsequently granted a King's Scholarship at Westminster School. At Oxford he excelled in mathematics, while also learning good Hebrew and Syriac alongside Greek and Latin. In 1680 he was appointed chaplain to King Charles II. An abbreviated compilation of information tidbits and lists of animals, earth science, plants, crimes, and all kinds of information describing the natural and human world. The author was a French Jesuit scholar (1618-1673). Measures 6.25 x 3.75 inches. .

This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.

This is a First edition thus of the "Quatrième Edition, revue & considérablement augmentée", printed in 1780. New articles are starred (*) to differentiate from those which had appeared in previous editions of this momumental work. This a complete 12-volume set, with each volume between 500 and 600 pages. Later bindings are still tight and text remarkably free from foxing, fading or other blemishes, BUT it is in places rather heavily underlined in pencil and/or ballpoint. This concerns maybe 1% of the text and does not impact its readability. See photos.
