Utica: Curtiss & White, Printers, 1855. Hardcover. 12mo. Original brown pebble-grain blind-embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering. 419pp, (1p). Frontispiece, 8 small engravings. Very good. Faint edgewear, with spine lightly sunned but gilstamping bright and fresh; front and inner flyleaves bear some 1859 pencilled notes about various Smiths born in the 1830s (relatives?). A tight and lovely first edition of this quite scarce medical title, "A Book for Everybody" so claims the title page -- an early and seminal guide on using plants in the healing process and how the Native Americans utilized them. Like many medical texts of this era it has a kind of smorgasbord approach, and includes advice on treating ailments in cattle and poultry and a chapter titled "Remarks on Hunting, Fishing, and Catching Game.

Some faint pencil underlining shadows in the opening text pages; rear inner hinge a tad delicate, but sound. First edition, tight and nice, of this famed bibliography. Editors W.W. Francis, R.H. Hill and Archibald Mallach open this classic, explaining this collection and their method in approaching it, after which in his introduction, "The Collecting of a Library," Osler relates the history of his collection. 7,787 items are described -- an essential reference and scarce in first edition form. This copy bears the handsome custom bookplate on the front pastedown and ownership signature (dated "Chicago / 1930") of ELMER A. SMITH, a noted Chicago attorney and Illinois Central Railroad solicitor general who presented two papers about Osler, one titled "Sir William Osler as seen by a layman." PARIS: CHEZ PIERRE FRANC DIDOT LE JEUNE, 1767. In 16. Dim. 17x10,5 cm. Pp. (6)+X+(2)+227+(1)+(4)+X+(8)+228. Collazionato e completo. Raro, solo tre copie…

It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties.
