About This Item

Viking Press, New York, 1945; First Edition; tall 8vo, 131 pages plus list of Steinbeck titles at the back; beige cloth; illustrated front board inset. First illustrated edition of John Steinbeck’s heartbreaking story of the maturation of a young boy growing up on his father’s ranch in the Salinas Valley, prompting Clifton Fadiman in 1941 to comment, "The Grapes of Wrath excepted, The Red Pony is the finest thing he (Steinbeck) has done." In 1949, Republic Pictures made the story into the Technicolor film of the same name starring Myrna Loy, Robert Mitchum, and Peter Miles, for which Steinbeck himself wrote the screenplay and Aaron Copeland composed the score. Printed by Zeese-Wilkinson Co. Illustrations by Wesley Dennis. Fine. Clean, crisp, very bright, corners sharp, no signatures, in a structurally sound slipcase that has moderate edge wear and surface soil.

Synopsis

"The Red Pony" is an episodic novella written by American writer John Steinbeck in 1933. The first three chapters were published in magazines from 1933–1936, and the full book was published in 1937 by Viking Penguin. The stories in the book are tales of a boy named Jody Tiflin. The book has four different stories about Jody and his life on his father's California ranch.
