Stated first Edition/First Printing; Fine in a fine dust jacket. A pristine copy very scarce in this condition. A National Book Award winner in 1938, voted the UK's favorite book of the last 225 years in 2017 (beating out To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, etc.), and now part of the Great American Read as one of the USA's favorite novels. This is the first American edition that was published about a month after the first UK edition. This volume is in fine condition with only a mild crimp to the bottom spine end and some discoloration to the paste downs; housed in a fine dust jacket that is exceptionally clean and bright with no flaws. Possibly the nicest copy available on the market. A SIGNED Christmas card from the author laid in. Not remaindered, not price clipped (2.75 intact), not ex-library, not book club, and no other markings are present. A one of a kind book in archival protection. Now housed in a beautiful custom clamshell box.

London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1886. 1st edition. Cloth. Good +. 1st edition. 2 volume set, complete. A Good+ set. 8vo. [Vol.1] 313, (2); [Vol.2] 312, (5) pp. Bound in the publisher's blue cloth with title and decoration in black. Floral end papers. Moderate edge wear, particularly at the spines' crowns. Vol.1's front board a bit rubbed, with uneven sunning. Front joints just beginning to loosen. A very scarce set, in the original cloth. Part of Hardy's Wessex books, with Casterbridge taking Dorset's place. This first edition was of a very small run of 750 printed, the result of a reader from Smith and Elder not being impressed with the story, as it had a lack of gentry (Claire Tomalin, Thomas Hardy: The Time-torn Man, 2006). Considered to be one of Hardy's masterpieces.

Description:
v+321 pages. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with gilt lettering to cover and spine. First British edition. St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness. He alternated dictating St. Ives and The Weir of Hermiston but gradually lost interest in the former. The plot concerns the adventures of the dashing Capitaine Jacques St. Ives, a Napoleonic soldier, after his capture by the British. Condition: Corners bumped and rubbed, shelf wear, hinges and spine heal moderately rubbed, previous owner's name on front end paper else a very good copy.
