Eminent medievalist Marshall Baldwin's masterful account of the important Crusader Raymond lll of Tripolis and his role in the Second Crusade's Battle of Hattin in 1187, which ended in disaster for the Crusaders. Raymond's complicated role in the internecine squabbles among the Latins and his alliance with Saladin provided ammunition for his detractors in subsequent times, principally by apologists for Guy de Luisgnan, king of Jerusalem when it fell to Saladin.
