New York: George Routledge and Sons, 1886. Book. Very Good. Cloth. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Olive green cloth with gilt lettering/ black design ( piping shepherd & sheep) to the front and gilt lettering to the spine.Also laid in are two small photos of two different designs for the Caldecott medal. This copy is VG. Exterior is modestly/ moderately worn to tips, spine ends, and edges. All page edges gilt. Boards are very modestly rubbed. Gilt and drawing are bright on front board -- gilt on spine modestly worn. Inside has dark brown EPs with BP of Frederic Melcher to front paste down as well as a small label to bottom of FPD.Inside has 172 illustrations, including a sepia , tissue guarded photo of Caldecott. Otherwise unmarked with modest/moderate toning. Binding beginning to crack at a few pages, but pages are secure.Copyright date is 1886, the year of Caldecott's death. Melcher was the noted American publisher who first proposed the Caldecott Medal for children's picture books in 1937. Outstanding provenance !.
