About This Item

London: Andre Deutsch, 1984. Charles Gidley entered the Royal Navy in 1954. He served as seaman specialist, pilot and flying instructor in the Fleet Air Arm and from 1968-69 he captained a minesweeper based at Malta. His novel is the story of Steven Jannaway, a naval officer; and simultaneously it is an x-ray picture, sometimes highly disconcerting,of the grand and glorious institution in which he serves. The author has brought his extraordinary gifts as a storyteller and creator of character to bear on an aspect of British life which is almost legendary. The result is a novel as absorbing as it is surprising. Attractive deep blue boards. No ownership markings. A sharp, tight and bright book in a full wrap-around pictorial dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Carol Binch. A very nice copy!. First British Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine.
