NY: The Viking Press, 1944. First edition with war time paper; 1945 Newbery Medal Winner; small 4to.; illustrated cloth covered boards with illustrated endpapers, hardcover; 128 pages; black and white illustrations; envelope glued to back endpaper with a letter from Robert Lawson to the mother of a young fan who had visited Rabbit Hill. He enclosed a photograph of St. Francis since the child was unable to take a photo of him and describes the statue. Letter is dated and Signed by Lawson, Nov. 21, 1945; the boards are foxed and corners lightly bumped else very good but lacking the dust jacket.
