TRUE RARE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, RARE FIRST PRINTING ! . *** **** *** . . THE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF THE . . FIRST "LITTLE RED BOOK" ISSUED AND USED BY RED GUARDS . . . DURING THE WENHUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION] . . . "MAO ZHUXI YU LU:" "QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN MAO" . . . THE MOST FAMOUS AND IMPORTANT OF THE "LITTLE RED BOOKS" . . . WITH THE VERY RARE LIN BIAO'S SLOGAN & FOREWORD . . * With a the most famous of all by LIN Biao slogans, December 16, 1966, written in his Chinese calligraphy frontispiece, reading: . "READ CHAIRMAN MAO'S WRITINGS, LISTEN TO CHAIRMAN MAO'S WORDS, AND FOLLOW CHAIRMAN MAO'S INSTRUCTIONS LIN Biao" .. When LIN went out of favor with Mao, the Hong Wei Bing [Red Guards] either plucked out Lin's writings & slogans or defaced them. Therefore copies complete with all of Lin's writings remain exceptionally RARE and seldom found. Our copies are described when having Lin's writings intact. . With the Chinese as the last page, dated 1966, stating first edition, first printing.. . *** This title was published in English, to inspire revolution throughout the world. . Bound in the original publisher's red vinyl covers with blind-stamped titles. . "RETURN/REPLACEMENT GUARANTEE BY THE PUBLISHERS: At the last page is a small label in Chinese stating this book will be replaces if it has any defects... This is also one of the key 'points' found in the First Edition, First Printing of the English language. Not all copies had this as they were often loosely inserted inside of the back vinyl cover small pocket for that purpose. others have been tipped in to prevent against loss. Issued with the English language . *** THE FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING: . The Beijing, 1966 edition of this title came with a red vinyl cover with embossed title in English: QUOTATIONS FROM CHAIRMAN MAO TSE TUNG. Our copy does not have any gold on this title, but we believe it came exactly this way. Later editions had color photos of Mao on the cover, some with gilt title lettering. . This FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING came with the LIN Biao slogan [shown above] as a frontispiece in Chinese, balance of the text is in English. . With sepia-tone Mao frontispiece photo. . This edition should not be confused with other, later editions which have varying covers. . With a red title and green imprint on the title page; with a green double-rule line outline. . *** With a stiff card title page printed in red, with green double-rule outline. With sepia-tone Mao frontispiece photo. . *** USE BY HONG WEI BING: This book was designed to be kept in the pocket, or carried in the Xiao Hong Bao [small red cloth shoulder bag] with the likeness of Mao and loyalty slogans, carried and used by the Hone Wei Bing [Red Guards] during the WENHUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION]. . This kind of "LITTLE RED BOOK" was carried by Hong Wei Bing to mass rallies in Tiananmen Square, when they were greeted by Chairman Mao and endorsed by Marshall LIN Biao. . Many of the young HONG WEI BING had a tiny red cotton shoulder bags used to carry the book. These had yellow characters stenciled on it with the slogan "MAO ZHU XI MAN SUI" ["Long Live Chairman Mao"], and several others regarding Zhong [loyalty] and several other variants. . Please inquire with us, we have the rare originals in stock! . *** LIN BIAO CONNECTION: Not all other editions came with or had the LIN slogan pulled by official order. . It is believed that most of these books could have contained a hand calligraphic slogan by LIN Biao just after the Mao frontispiece saying: . "Du Mao zhu xi de shu, Ting Mao zhu xi de hua, Zhao Mao zhu xi de zhi shì ban shi, Zuo Mao zhu xi de hao zhan shì." ["Study Chairman Mao's Writings, Follow his teachings and act according to his instructions"]. This is found in may others issued from 1966 onwards, until 1971. . It was common after 1971 when LIN was declared a traitor to the party and expelled, his writings, likeness and all evidence of his words and slogans were officially expunged from the record. It was common during that time to pull out any slogans or writings by LIN from books or paste over a blank cover paper. We do not see any evidence of this in this book. It is entirely possible his slogan or writings we’re not included from the date of publishing more as an oversight than by design. His writings or slogans which have been clearly expunged are easy to discern. . In the [1969] edition there is a 3 page introduction by LIN Biao, dated: "December 16, 1966," just after the mass rally in Tiananmen square, Beijing, where the Cultural Revolution and the Red Guards were officially greeted and sanctioned by Chairman Mao and endorsed by Marshal LIN Biao. This was an historic day in confirming the beginning of the Cultural Revolution and releasing the RED GUARDS to carry out the chaotic results of the brutal action against intellectuals, teachers, landlords, capitalists & so many others. . *** PER WIKIPEDIA: "Mao Zhuxi Yulu is a book of statements from speeches and writings by Mao Zedong, the former Chairman of the Communist Party of China, published from 1964 to about 1976 and widely distributed during the Cultural Revolution. . The most popular versions were printed in small sizes that could be easily carried and were bound in bright red covers, becoming commonly known internationally as the "Little Red Book." See below. . *** SOCIAL IMPACT: . During the 1960s, the book was the single most visible icon in mainland China, even more visible than the image of the Chairman himself. In posters and pictures created by CPC's propaganda artists, nearly every painted character, whether smiling or looking determined, was seen with a copy of the book in his or her hand.[citation needed] After the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976 and the rise of Deng Xiaoping in 1978, the importance of the book waned considerably, and the glorification of Mao's quotations was considered to be left deviationism and a cult of personality. . *** LIN BIAO [1907-1971]: . Lin became instrumental in creating the foundations for Mao Zedong's cult of personality in the early 1960s, and was rewarded for his service in the Cultural Revolution by being named Mao's designated successor as the sole Vice Chairman of the Communist Party of China, from 1966 until his death. . Lin was also the creator of the "HONG BAOSHU" ["LITTLE RED BOOK"] phenomenon consisting of any small book containing the words of either Mao or Lin, including slogans. These kinds of "HONG BAOSHU" were religiously carried by Hong Wei Bing to mass rallies in Tiananmen Square, on the march in the street and at during demonstrations, invoking these leaders words, and taunting citizens throughout China. . Often these books were contained in a small red cotton cloth shoulder purse that had yellow-stenciled slogans & images of these two leaders. . Lin & Chairman Mao, welcomed and greeted a mass rally in Tiananmen Square in 1966, by the HONG WEI BING [RED GUARDS]. These two great leaders sanctioned and endorsed the RED GUARDS to begin the WEN HUA DA GEMING [CULTURAL REVOLUTION], and were officially authorized to "cleanse society" of counter-revolutionary thoughts, landlords, intellectuals, and any others who represented anything less than the new wave of revolutionary thoughts and actions. Chaos reigned for nearly ten years. . Chairman Mao assigned Lin Biao as the leader of the Hong Wei Bing, thereafter he focused his attention to leading and Bing, guiding these youths, who quickly got out of control, wreaking havoc throughout the country. . A young woman at the rally pinned a "HONG WEI BING" armband on Chairman Mao, thus showing Mao's support and authorization for the Cultural Revolution. This has become an iconic photograph. . Lin died in September 13, 1971, the exact events of this "Lin Biao incident" have been a source of speculation ever since. The Chinese government's official explanation is that Lin and his family attempted to flee following a botched coup against Mao. Others have argued that they fled out of fear they would be purged, as Lin's relationship with other Communist Party leaders. . Following Lin's death, he was officially condemned as a traitor by the Communist Party, and was labeled a major "counter-revolutionary forces" of the Cultural Revolution, receiving official blame from the Chinese government. . At that time, Lin's name was officially ordered expunged from all public places, his books were either defaced, removing his name, photo and signature. A very large majority of his works were destroyed or defaced. Finding a book by Lin, or books with his calligraphic slogans and signature are now RARE and difficult to find. Millions were destroyed. . Upon Mao's death, the Cultural Revolution was officially ordered to stop, however being in 'motion' it took another two years for it to end. . *** CONDITION The book is bound in the original publisher's red vinyl covers with an inset color photo of Chairman Mao. . The 1968 edition is solidly bound, the covers are a bit warped & used as usual, the contents are clean with a couple period small ink marks, otherwise the text is clean. There is a former owner's inked name on the first free fly leaf, and the leading edge, but mild and not vivid. . The 1969 edition is solidly bound, the covers are clean. The first and last fly leaves are a bit damp stained, darkened, the text is clean but slightly damped, no marks or blemishes. There is a former's owner's lightly penned name on the first free end paper, Please read the condition notes for each edition available. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: .
