Sir Basil Home Thomson, KCB (1861 â 1939) was a British intelligence officer, police officer, prison governor, colonial administrator, and writer. In 1913, Thomson was appointed Assistant Commissioner "C" (Crime) of London's Metropolitan Police, which made him the head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at New Scotland Yard. When World War I broke out in 1914, the CID acted as the enforcement arm for Britain's military intelligence apparatus. Thomson was involved in arrests in several high-profile espionage cases. One who he interrogated was âMata Hariâ the Dutch exotic dancer later to be executed by the French as a spy. Illustrated with 13 black-and-white plates, including a frontispiece. A previous owner's name & address is penned on the flyleaf. The fore-edge is foxed & there is scattered light foxing throughout. The top page corners are bumped. There are a few pencil markings in the margins. Good only.
A detective in the Criminal Investigation Department of London's Scotland Yard writes a fascinating account of his work. Most of the book concerns espionage during the First World War with chapters on such cases as that of Roger Casement.
