First edition, large quarto; viii + 724pp. In original half leather binding, very worn, boards detached, spine backstrip missing, opening and closing leaves loose with marginal chipping and creasing without loss of text, text block otherwise sound with unobtrusive sporadic light staining and soiling only, complete with engraved portrait frontispiece, extra engraved title page and 16 full page engraved plates. Despite its tired condition, still a complete working copy of this early illustrated biography in first edition.
