About This Item

[Paris] Isidore Liseux, 1888. Hard Cover. xxiii, [1], 216 pages; 16.5 cm. Title in red & black; text in Italian & English on facing pages; fine paper. The DBI article (29: 123-132) by P. Farenga dates the original Latin text of these proverbs to April 1454, while the author was in Milan. The Italian version, first published Venice, 1518, enjoyed great success for three centuries. The present work is a translation of the 1884 French edition, which was translated from the Italian by Alcide Bonneau. These ribald stories are still entertaining more than 500 years after their composition. Original stiff printed wrappers. A handsome gift book, unopened and uncut, in an oriental-cloth box by James DiMarcantonio, Hope Bindery & Box Co. Stock#OB377.
