About This Item

Philadelphia: Published by Carey & Hart, 1836. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Tall octavo. 50pp. Contemporary, probably publisher's pale lavender muslin. Bookplate and tiny embossed seal of Isaac Norris, and contemporary ownership signature and Philadelphia address of Isaac Norris, Jr. on the front board. Modest staining and sunning on the boards and light wear along the edges of the spine, still a sound very good copy. Play by a Philadelphia attorney and amateur dramatist. The bookplate is that of a prominent Philadelphia attorney with a legendary Colonial library and Speaker of the Assembly who in 1752 commissioned the creation and purchase of what later became known as The Liberty Bell. He long predeceased this play (dying in 1766, his books were donated to Dickinson College in 1783), but we have seen several incidences of his namesake, Isaac Norris, Jr., continuing to use the senior Norris' bookplate in his books long after his death.
