London: Witherby & Co, 1914. This is a proof plate, uncolored. There is a penciled number "199" in the top right and "1" in the lower right corner. Paper size 13 3/4 x 9 3/4". Ca. 1914. Mathews published his masterwork "Birds of Australia" from 1910 through 1928. In their published form, the lithographs were hand colored. The Australasian Bittern is found in WA, SA, Vic, Tas, NSW & Qld. Edges a little ruffled, corners bit bumped, and small raised bumps overall. Markings consistent with a working copy.
