About This Item

California: Paramount, 1958. Unbound. Near Fine. Nine stapled 8.4" x 14" sheets printed rectos only. Near fine with slight toning and curling. Production notes and synopsis for the Elvis Presley "musical drama," *King Creole* directed by *Casablanca* director Michael Curtiz. The packet includes a sales pitch for potential theaters along with a cast list, character descriptions, and a run through of the plot. Paramount proclaimed this would be "easily the most important picture of Elvis Presley's career." This was the fourth film for Presley who would get closest to reaching his dream of being James Dean with this vehicle based on the Harold Robbin's novel *A Stone for Danny Fisher* about a poor New Orleans' boy who drops out of school and joins a gang to earn money to support his destitute family. Elvis played alongside Walter Matthau and Carolyn Jones and would later admit that this character had been his favorite role. The film was well received commercially and critically considered by most to be Presley's edgiest and best performance. The Song "Hard Headed Woman" from the soundtrack went to number 1 on the Billboard charts, number 2 on the R&B charts, while the album was certified Gold. Presumably a promotional release, thinly disguised as an internal memo, and exceptionally uncommon.
