Description:
1858 1ed Brownlow SLAVERY Debate Abolitionist Pryne Civil War Fred Douglass RARE
William Gannaway Brownlow was an American politician during the reconstruction era. Even though he supported slavery, Brownlow, according to Larned, opposed secession and was imprisoned by the Confederacy for refusing to take an oath of allegiance to the southern government. In 1858, Brownlow and Reverend Abram Pryne entered into a debate over slavery, a debate that was originally supposed to be with Frederick Douglass. Brownlow stated at the opening of this debate:
"Not only will I throughout this discussion openly and boldly take the ground that Slavery as it exists in America ought to be perpetuated, but that slavery is an established and inevitable condition to human society."
Curiously, following the debate and into the Civil War, Brownlow changed his stance and began supporting abolitionists and pursuing emancipation efforts.

1859 AFRICA David Livingstone Missionary African Travel Illustrated Zambezi RARE

"If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men who will come if there is no road at all."
– David Livingstone

A rare early edition of David Livingstone's "Missionary Travels". In this book Livingstone describes his travel and work as a missionary to the indigenous people in Central and South Africa. Through the mid-19th-century, South Africa was completely unknown to Europeans, so Livingstone's mission brought light to more than just spreading the gospel. The work deals with customs, languages, animal and plant biology, geology, topography, and mineralogy. "The geographical results of his journeys were of supreme importance and made it possible to fill in great stretches of the maps of Central Africa which hitherto had been blank" (PMM 341).
Livingstone discovered the Zambesi River and Victoria Falls (which he named), parts of Angola, and Mozambique; met with… Read More

Description:
The book pictured is the copy being sold. The shocking absence of the binding boards may give the buyer opportunities that a buyer of this book with the original binding would not have. The book itself is in very good condition; the text is tight, gold gilt edges on the top, side, and bottom glitter. There is damage to the front flyleaf, but by the half-title page that fraying damage ends and is minor. There is light tanning of the paper at the edges. All the engraving have intact onion skin protection.Given the absence of any binding, this copy may be have more value by extracting its 36 engraving and the other prints. I hope that someone might be willing to rebind this book; giving you the opportunity to blend your style preference and the original 19th ornate style. This of course is a beautifully printed book, 257 pages. As this book weighs nearly 5.5 lbs., this book might require additional postage for expedited, international, or combined orders.

Description:
Helsinki: Schildts, 1968. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fine. First Edition. The rarest of all Tove Jansson's first editions, the first trade edition of Sculptor's Daughter. As the publisher to whom she submitted her manuscripts Schildts were nervous about this departure from the Moomins series, particularly as the author refused point-blank to illustrate the book. As a small Finnish publishing house which caters only for the Swedish-speaking minority in that country it is likely that no more than 500 copies were printed. In the event, demand exceeded supply and Schildts published a second edition the following year. Incredibly hard-to-find, only the second copy to have passed through our hands in 30 years. A Fine copy in the publisher's 1/4 cloth with handsome marbled boards, pp. 146 with index at the rear. Exceptionally clean with strong gilt titles, no bumping of the extremities, square and tight. The most minor of creasing at the crown. A beautiful copy.

St. Ives: Being The Adventures of a French Prisoner in England (1897) is an unfinished novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. It was completed in 1898 by Arthur Quiller-Couch. Unable to write, Stevenson dictated thirty chapters of the novel to his stepdaughter as a diversion from his debilitating illness.
