About This Item
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1991. Early printing of "the best history of oil ever written" (Business Week), which went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "To Senator Specter, with best wishes on the energy years ahead, Daniel Yergin May 9, 1991." The recipient, Arlen Specter served as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania from 1981 to 2011. Specter was a Democrat from 1951 to 1965, then a Republican from 1965 until 2009, when he switched back to the Democratic Party. First elected in 1980, he represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate for 30 years. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert Anthony. Spellbinding...irresistible...monumental...must be read to understand the first thing about the role of oil in modern history" (The New York Times). "A masterly narrative...The Prize portrays the interweaving of national and corporate interests, the conflicts and stratagems, the miscalculations, the follies, and the ironies" (James Schlesinger).
